Imagine this: on one of the days of this blessed month, you are fasting and have felt thirsty since you woke up. And as the day drags on, your mouth becomes progressively dry; you just realized that you didn't drink enough the night before, and now you feel unprecedently thirsty.

This is precisely what happened to me a few days ago. My mind started to pick up the pace. I was thinking about the times I wasted water when I shouldn't have; I was thinking about people who live in countries that are much hotter than where I live and have to walk for miles and miles before they can get access to water. Or others who simply don't have access to potable water and have to drink it muddy with all sorts of bacteria.

Fasting during Ramadan has incredible health benefits. Just look at all the intermittent fasting trends out there. But Ramadan is also a month of reflection for billions of Muslims worldwide. I think this was my reflection moment.

… And waste not by excess, for Allah loves not the wasters.
Quran 7:31

Our modern life conveniences have further us from comprehending the value of this unreplaceable natural resource. We don't think twice about how we are wasting water, from washing our cars unnecessarily to leaving the tap open to supporting companies who waste water (i.e., soft drink companies). What kind of world will we leave behind for our children? I can't imagine leaving a world behind where my children would struggle for something as necessary as water, especially knowing it could have been prevented.

The best form of charity is to give someone water.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

How often have we passed by a homeless person in the dead of summer heat and didn't think twice about that person being thirsty? How many times have we drank water and didn't offer it to our parents, brothers, sisters, or spouses? We don't think about these things. I know I haven't thought about these things, and one of my goals for this summer is to give someone water who needs it the most.

We, as a species, need to actively think about water and preserving it as much as we can. Allah s.w.t has blessed us, and we need to help those who are less blessed. And we shouldn't forget, if He has blessed us with water, he can easily take it away from us if we don't respect it.

… And we send water down from the sky, in measure, and allocate it on Earth, and lo! We are also able to withdraw it.
Quran 23:18

Besides this, Allah knows best and may he grant us understanding.
