A concern paramount to all Muslim parents is their child's development within the backdrop of Muslim households. There is an essential need to recognize how to negotiate the delicate equilibrium between maintaining religious customs and values, while simultaneously nurturing our children's positive development in a secular setting.

A key aspect of healthy growth is fostering confidence in kids. So how can we raise confident Muslim children who are secure in their identity and faith? Allow me to share some practical tips from both psychological and Islamic perspectives.

Provide Love and Security

Psychology tells us that children thrive when they feel secure. Within an Islamic framework, it's essential to balance discipline with genuine love and affection.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was known for his tenderness towards children. He stated:

He does not belong to us who does not show mercy to our young and honor our old.
Tirmidhi

In fostering a sense of security and acceptance at home, our Muslim children will feel confident expressing their feelings and thoughts without fear.

Encourage Open Discussions

Children are curious by nature. Encourage questions and discussions about Islam, its teachings and the world in general. Encouraging curiosity and fostering critical thinking strengthens children's intellectual growth and builds confident mindsets.

Assure them that it is okay to have questions or doubts and guide them to find the answers.

Teach Them About Their Faith

Knowledge about one's faith plays a significant role in developing a strong and confident Muslim identity. Encourage a love for Islamic knowledge from a young age. This can include understanding the basis of Islamic beliefs, the values and morals Islam promotes, life examples of the Prophet (PBUH), stories of the companions, and historical events in Islam.

Lead By Example

As per psychology, the primary source of learning for children is observation and imitation. On the religious front, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also emphasized this by stating

Everyone of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

Exhibit the values, manners and attitudes you want your children to acquire.

Promote Resilience

Life is filled with challenges. Encourage resilience in children by teaching them that failure is not the end. The Islamic concept of Qadr or divine decree is an excellent tool to foster resilience.

Teach them that in every hardship, there is indeed ease (Qur’an 94:5-6).

Uplift Social Skills

Encourage interactions within diverse social settings. The Prophet (PBUH) stated

The believer who mixes with people and bears their annoyance with patience will have a greater reward than the believer who does not mix with people and does not put up with their annoyance.
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

Such interactions will not only help them develop superior social skills but also build confidence.

Foster Self-Worth and Self-Respect

Creating an environment that fosters a healthy self-perception is pivotal in promoting well-being. This involves developing an atmosphere that encourages positivity, acceptance, emotional growth and a sense of belonging.

In conclusion, raising confident children in a secular society is not without its challenges, but it is indeed achievable. The combination of consistent love, life-guiding teachings, fostering curiosity, providing a balanced worldview, modeling of desired behaviors, promoting resilience, uplifting social skills and fostering self-worth can create a fertile ground for young Muslims to grow into confident and responsible individuals.
