Ar-Ra'd (The Thunder)

This Surah takes its name from the word (ar-Ra'ad) (thunder) that occurs in v. 13. It is merely the symbolic name of the Surah and does not in any way mean that the Surah deals with the scientific problems connected with thunder.

The internal evidence (vv. 27-31 and vv. 34-48) shows that this Surah was revealed in the last stage of the Mission of the Holy Prophet at Makkah and during the same period in which Surahs Yunus, Hud and Al- A'araf were sent down. The manner of speec...

All this decisive evidence clearly proves that this Surah was revealed during the last stage of the Prophet's Mission at Makkah....

Ar-Ra'd

الٓمٓر Alif Laam Mim Ra.

تِلْكَ These

ءَايَٰتُ (are) the Verses

ٱلْكِتَٰبِ (of) the Book.

وَٱلَّذِىٓ And that which

أُنزِلَ has been revealed

إِلَيْكَ to you

مِن from

رَّبِّكَ your Lord

ٱلْحَقُّ (is) the truth,

وَلَٰكِنَّ but

أَكْثَرَ most

ٱلنَّاسِ (of) the mankind

لَا (do) not

يُؤْمِنُونَ believe.

ٱللَّهُ Allah

ٱلَّذِى (is) the One Who

رَفَعَ raised

ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ the heavens

بِغَيْرِ without

عَمَدٍ pillars

تَرَوْنَهَا that you see,

ثُمَّ then

ٱسْتَوَىٰ He established

عَلَى on

ٱلْعَرْشِ the Throne

وَسَخَّرَ and subjected

ٱلشَّمْسَ the sun

وَٱلْقَمَرَ and the moon

كُلٌّ each

يَجْرِى running

لِأَجَلٍ for a term

مُّسَمًّى appointed,

يُدَبِّرُ He arranges

ٱلْأَمْرَ the matter;

يُفَصِّلُ He details

ٱلْءَايَٰتِ the Signs

لَعَلَّكُم so that you may

بِلِقَآءِ in the meeting

رَبِّكُمْ (with) your Lord

تُوقِنُونَ believe with certainty.

وَهُوَ And He

ٱلَّذِى (is) the One Who

مَدَّ spread

ٱلْأَرْضَ the earth,

وَجَعَلَ and placed

فِيهَا in it

رَوَٰسِىَ firm mountains

وَأَنْهَٰرًا and rivers,

وَمِن and from

كُلِّ all

ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ (of) the fruits

جَعَلَ He made

فِيهَا in it

زَوْجَيْنِ pairs

ٱثْنَيْنِ two.

يُغْشِى He covers

ٱلَّيْلَ the night

ٱلنَّهَارَ (with) the day.

إِنَّ Indeed,

فِى in

ذَٰلِكَ that

لَءَايَٰتٍ surely (are) Signs

لِّقَوْمٍ for a people

يَتَفَكَّرُونَ who ponder.

وَفِى And in

ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth

قِطَعٌ are tracks

مُّتَجَٰوِرَٰتٌ neighboring,

وَجَنَّٰتٌ and gardens

مِّنْ of

أَعْنَٰبٍ grapevines

وَزَرْعٌ and crops

وَنَخِيلٌ and date-palms

صِنْوَانٌ trees (growing) from a single root

وَغَيْرُ and not

صِنْوَانٍ trees (growing) from a single root.

يُسْقَىٰ watered

بِمَآءٍ with water,

وَٰحِدٍ one;

وَنُفَضِّلُ but We cause to exceed

بَعْضَهَا some of them

عَلَىٰ over

بَعْضٍ others

فِى in

ٱلْأُكُلِ the fruit.

إِنَّ Indeed,

فِى in

ذَٰلِكَ that

لَءَايَٰتٍ surely (are) Signs

لِّقَوْمٍ for a people

يَعْقِلُونَ who use reason.

وَإِن And if

تَعْجَبْ you (are) astonished,

فَعَجَبٌ then astonishing

قَوْلُهُمْ (is) their saying,

أَءِذَا "When

كُنَّا we are

تُرَٰبًا dust,

أَءِنَّا will we

لَفِى (be) indeed, in

خَلْقٍ a creation

جَدِيدٍ new?"

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ Those

ٱلَّذِينَ (are) the ones who

كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieved

بِرَبِّهِمْ in their Lord,

وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ and those

ٱلْأَغْلَٰلُ the iron chains

فِىٓ (will be) in

أَعْنَاقِهِمْ their necks,

وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ those

أَصْحَٰبُ (are the) companions

ٱلنَّارِ (of) the Fire,

هُمْ they

فِيهَا in it

خَٰلِدُونَ (will) abide forever.
