The Surah takes its name Ar-Rum from the second verse in which the words ghulibat-ir-Rum have occurred.

غُلِبَتِ Have been defeated

ٱلرُّومُ the Romans

فِىٓ In

أَدْنَى (the) nearest

ٱلْأَرْضِ land.

وَهُم But they,

مِّنۢ after

بَعْدِ after

غَلَبِهِمْ their defeat,

سَيَغْلِبُونَ will overcome

فِى Within

بِضْعِ a few

سِنِينَ years.

لِلَّهِ For Allah

ٱلْأَمْرُ (is) the command

مِن before

قَبْلُ before

وَمِنۢ and after.

بَعْدُ and after.

وَيَوْمَئِذٍ And that day

يَفْرَحُ will rejoice

ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ the believers

بِنَصْرِ With (the) help

ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah.

يَنصُرُ He helps

مَن whom

يَشَآءُ He wills.

وَهُوَ And He

ٱلْعَزِيزُ (is) the All-Mighty,

ٱلرَّحِيمُ the Most Merciful.
