At-Talaaq (Divorce)

At-Talaq is not only the name of this Surah but also the title of its subject matter, for it contains commandments about Talaq (divorce) itself. Hadrat \`Abdullah bin Mas\`ud has described it as Surah an-Nisa al-qusra also, i.e. the shorter Surah an-

Hadrat Abdullah bin Masud has Pointed out, and the internal evidence of the subject matter of the Surah confirms the same, that it must have been sent down after those verses of surah Al-Baqarah in which commandments concerning divorce were given for...

In order to understand the commandments of this Surah, it would be useful to refresh one's memory about the instructions which have been given in the Qur'an concerning divorce and the waiting period (Iddat) above....

At-Talaaq

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا O

ٱلنَّبِىُّ Prophet!

إِذَا When

طَلَّقْتُمُ you divorce

ٱلنِّسَآءَ [the] women,

فَطَلِّقُوهُنَّ then divorce them

لِعِدَّتِهِنَّ for their waiting period,

وَأَحْصُوا۟ and keep count

ٱلْعِدَّةَ (of) the waiting period,

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ and fear

ٱللَّهَ Allah,

رَبَّكُمْ your Lord.

لَا (Do) not

تُخْرِجُوهُنَّ expel them

مِنۢ from

بُيُوتِهِنَّ their houses,

وَلَا and not

يَخْرُجْنَ they should leave

إِلَّآ except

أَن that

يَأْتِينَ they commit

بِفَٰحِشَةٍ an immorality

مُّبَيِّنَةٍ clear.

وَتِلْكَ And these

حُدُودُ (are the) limits

ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah.

وَمَن And whoever

يَتَعَدَّ transgresses

حُدُودَ (the) limits

ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah

فَقَدْ then certainly

ظَلَمَ he has wronged

نَفْسَهُۥ himself.

لَا Not

تَدْرِى you know;

لَعَلَّ Perhaps

ٱللَّهَ Allah

يُحْدِثُ will bring about,

بَعْدَ after

ذَٰلِكَ that,

أَمْرًا a matter.

فَإِذَا Then when

بَلَغْنَ they have reached

أَجَلَهُنَّ their term,

فَأَمْسِكُوهُنَّ then retain them

بِمَعْرُوفٍ with kindness

أَوْ or

فَارِقُوهُنَّ part with them

بِمَعْرُوفٍ with kindness.

وَأَشْهِدُوا۟ And take witness

ذَوَىْ two men

عَدْلٍ just

مِّنكُمْ among you

وَأَقِيمُوا۟ and establish

ٱلشَّهَٰدَةَ the testimony

لِلَّهِ for Allah.

ذَٰلِكُمْ That

يُوعَظُ is instructed,

بِهِۦ with it,

مَن whoever

كَانَ [is]

يُؤْمِنُ believes

بِٱللَّهِ in Allah

وَٱلْيَوْمِ and the Day

ٱلْءَاخِرِ the Last.

وَمَن And whoever

يَتَّقِ fears

ٱللَّهَ Allah,

يَجْعَل He will make

لَّهُۥ for him

مَخْرَجًا a way out,

At-Talaaq

وَيَرْزُقْهُ And He will provide for him

مِنْ from

حَيْثُ where

لَا not

يَحْتَسِبُ he thinks.

وَمَن And whoever

يَتَوَكَّلْ puts his trust

عَلَى upon

ٱللَّهِ Allah,

فَهُوَ then He

حَسْبُهُۥٓ (is) sufficient for him.

إِنَّ Indeed,

ٱللَّهَ Allah

بَٰلِغُ (will) accomplish

أَمْرِهِۦ His purpose.

قَدْ Indeed,

جَعَلَ has set

ٱللَّهُ Allah

لِكُلِّ for every

شَىْءٍ thing

قَدْرًا a measure.

At-Talaaq

وَٱلَّٰٓـِٔى And those who

يَئِسْنَ have despaired

مِنَ of

ٱلْمَحِيضِ the menstruation

مِن among

نِّسَآئِكُمْ your women,

إِنِ if

ٱرْتَبْتُمْ you doubt,

فَعِدَّتُهُنَّ then their waiting period

ثَلَٰثَةُ (is) three

أَشْهُرٍ months,

وَٱلَّٰٓـِٔى and the ones who

لَمْ not

يَحِضْنَ [they] menstruated.

وَأُو۟لَٰتُ And those who (are)

ٱلْأَحْمَالِ pregnant,

أَجَلُهُنَّ their term

أَن until

يَضَعْنَ they deliver

حَمْلَهُنَّ their burdens.

وَمَن And whoever

يَتَّقِ fears

ٱللَّهَ Allah,

يَجْعَل He will make

لَّهُۥ for him

مِنْ of

أَمْرِهِۦ his affair

يُسْرًا ease.

ذَٰلِكَ That

أَمْرُ (is the) Command

ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah,

أَنزَلَهُۥٓ which He has sent down

إِلَيْكُمْ to you;

وَمَن and whoever

يَتَّقِ fears

ٱللَّهَ Allah,

يُكَفِّرْ He will remove

عَنْهُ from him

سَيِّـَٔاتِهِۦ his evil deeds

وَيُعْظِمْ and make great

لَهُۥٓ for him

أَجْرًا (his) reward.
